From the Principal
Welcome to Cathedral College Wangaratta, 2019. What a terrific start to the year it has been. We have new students at every year level, a host of new facilities and new staff to join in the daily life of our school. There is so much that is new and exciting. As one person observed as she looked at a string of Preps walking past in their brand new shirts, “they look crispy”!
To be able to move into the new building on Thursday was a joy. Long imagined, the building is literally half built, but as designed, built in such a way that we have moved in and are conducting academic classes for our VCE students. It is a credit to the architects, builders and our Business Manager Ian Collins and his team that we have landed so impressively. The new ‘lid’ on the basketball court, the sealing of the internal road, more car parking and countless other projects were completed over the break. The wonderful expansion of the Prep to Year Two playground is underway and promises to be a genuine haven for imaginative play.
We met as a learning community yesterday in The Stadium, filling it nicely! My message to the students centered on leaning into a year that will undoubtedly challenge them at times, to accept that some things will go wrong and to understand that those experiences help shape who we are and help us become better versions of ourselves into the future. I wish them every success, of course, but those successes need to be underpinned by a bedrock of resilience and experiences that prepare them for life’s variables.
We do not take lightly the trust and investment families place in us. We look to ensure that our students have the best that we can provide: care, resources, challenge, success (and disappointment!) and indeed much more as they embark on the adventure of school in 2019. We look forward to working with you in doing so, and hope that you might be able to join us for the Welcome Back function on Wednesday night.
Mr Adrian Farrer
Wednesday February 6: Parent Welcome Evening

Tuesday February 12: School Homeroom and Individual Photos
Academy Photography will be attending Cathedral on Tuesday February 12 for this year’s school photographs. On Monday February 4, your child will be given their own unique personalised payment envelope with instructions on how to order – online (prior to photo day), cash or credit card. The envelope must be given directly to the photographer on the day by your child at the time of their photograph. Please do not return the envelope prior to the day. Blazers will be required for this day.
Parents and Friends’ Events Term One
The Parents and Friends’ Association is a very active part of our College community. Many fundraising and social events are organised by the Parents and Friends and the support that is provided by this group enriches the College enormously. They generously support the SchoolTV online Wellbeing platform and this month’s issue focuses on preventing overwhelm in Year Twelve; please click on the link here to access this and previous editions that may be of interest for our parents and guardians.
Being involved in P & F activities is a great way to connect with Cathedral College Wangaratta students and families and in 2019 there will be several events on the calendar for our broader community to come together. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month in the staff room from 7.00pm with our first meeting on this Tuesday February 5. Please find the agenda here: P&F Agenda February 2019
Our first Calendar event will be the Country Fair, held on the school grounds on Friday March 22. If you would like to help with the upcoming Country Fair, please contact email@example.com. We are also looking for any College families who may wish to have a stall at the fair. More details about this event will be in future newsletters.
Parent Handbook and Term Dates
Year Seven to Year Twelve School Sports 2019: Selection for chosen sports
For a student in Year Seven to Year Twelve to be selected for a school sport, they are asked to complete an online form expressing their interest in their chosen sports. This form needs to be completed to enable them to be eligible for try-outs. A student can only play 2 sports per term in the Upper Hume Competition (SSV Rule), however this does not include Athletics, Swimming or Cross Country.
While signing up to play, students will be required to read and agree to the code of behaviour and uniform policy. It is advised that both students and parents understand what is expected when representing the school. Students need to click on the Online Sports Selection Form then use their allocated school email address to access the form on the student portal.
House Swimming Olympic Pool
Senior School House Swimming Wednesday February 13
Middle School House Swimming Thursday February 14
Junior School House Swimming Friday February 15
These three events will be all held at the Wangaratta Outdoor Olympic Pool. Students are asked to being a towel, drink bottles, sun smart items (school hat, sunscreen, rashie) and food for recess and lunch. Students may support their House by wearing their coloured House Polo Shirts. Please ensure that all personal items brought on the day are clearly labelled.
Students will be transported to the Wangaratta Olympic Pool by bus once they arrive at school in the morning. This means students should travel to school in the usual fashion. Additionally, buses will return students to school at the conclusion of the event and they will catch their usual buses home.
Currently the School Bus system is at capacity which means there will not be spaces available should a child need to travel home on a non-allocated bus. If there are any changes to travel situations, please contact Mrs Fran Hoyle on 5722 2144.
Oceanic Barefoot Championships 2019
Zali and Macy Peebles were selected in 2018 to represent Australia at the IWWF Oceanic Barefoot Championships on the Australia Day weekend in Sydney. They both competed in the Junior division with Zali coming first overall and Macy third – an incredible achievement and an honour for the girls to represent Australia. They have been training hard all summer with Macy and Zali achieving Personal Best scores in both Tricks and Slalom at the event.
